Vintage Pheasant Sculpture with Long Sweeping Tail, Patinated Metal on Oval Base, Animalier Style, Attributed Late 19th Century–c. 1900
The pheasant is named after a river. Ancient Greek writers described large, brightly feathered birds living along the Phasis, in what is now Georgia, and called them phasianos, “the bird of the Phasis.” The Romans carried pheasants across their empire. Over the centuries the birds became a fixture of European estates and hunting parties, and a favourite subject for painters and sculptors of country life.
This small sculpture shows a pheasant stepping forward, its head held high and its long tail sweeping out behind it in a graceful curve that ends in an upturned tip. The feathers are finely worked over the whole body: rows of overlapping scales across the breast and back, layered wing feathers, and a ruff around the neck. Fine lines run along the length of the tail. The bird stands on a small oval base modelled as rough ground. The metal has a warm, reddish-brown patina, with traces of blue-green verdigris settled in the deeper recesses.
The sculpture is in very good condition, with a natural patina. It carries no mark or signature. Its long, low silhouette suits a narrow shelf, a mantelpiece or a desk, and it makes a fine gift for anyone who loves birds or the countryside.
In short, this is a vintage pheasant sculpture in patinated metal in the animalier style, with a long sweeping tail, on an oval base. It is attributed to the late nineteenth century or around 1900, measures 20 cm from beak to tail, and is exactly as pictured.
