The afternoon tea table was once a small stage, and the cake basket held the centre of it. In northern European households it arrived piled with cake, biscuits or fruit, lifted by its handle and set down among the cups for everyone to admire. Makers lavished their finest pattern work on these baskets, because no other piece was passed around so often or looked at so closely.
This vintage basket is a graceful example of the form. A shallow round dish rises on a stepped pedestal foot, crowned by a swing handle that arcs from side to side and folds down when not in use. The sides and inner border are pierced with bands of fine vertical slots, interrupted at intervals by small rosette panels, with a beaded ring running around the inside of the well. Pierced decoration, in which the pattern is cut right through the metal, was prized because it kept a basket light in the hand while letting the light play through the design.
The basket reaches us with an even tarnish across its surface and warm tonal variation on the foot and handle, the natural colouring of a piece that has rested quietly for some time. We have left it as it is, so that you can decide whether to bring it back to a bright shine or keep its softened tone. It looks its best on a sideboard or tea table, heaped with fruit.
