Vintage Restauration Style Candlestick Table LampGold-Tone Metal Fluted Column on Lion-Paw Tripod Base, 19th Century, Sold Without Shade

When electric light reached French homes, families did not throw away their fine candlesticks. They had them monté en lampe, “mounted as a lamp,” with a cord threaded through the stem and a bulb holder fitted where the candle once stood. Specialist workshops did this work for decades, and many of the best-made nineteenth-century candlesticks survive today because they were given this second life.

This candlestick, attributed to the nineteenth century and in the Restauration style, has been mounted in just that way. It stands on a triangular plinth with concave sides, supported by three lion-paw feet. These rise beneath a spray of acanthus leaves to a slender fluted column, bound at top and bottom by bands of beading and fine patterned decoration. Above a gadrooned collar sits a vase-shaped candle cup with a patterned band and a petal-edged drip pan. A brass bulb holder with a double ring is fitted on top, ready to take a lampshade.

The lamp is in good condition. It weighs 1 kg, so it stands steadily. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. With a shade of your choice, it makes a handsome reading lamp for a desk, a library table or a bedside.

In short, this is a vintage Restauration style candlestick table lamp in gold-tone metal, with a fluted column on a lion-paw tripod base, attributed to the nineteenth century. It is 31 cm tall, sold without a shade, and exactly as pictured.
