Vintage Rococo Revival Style Candlestick with Bacchic Masks and Fruit Festoons, Silver-Tone Metal on Domed Rocaille Base, 21 cm
In ancient Rome, garlands of real fruit and flowers were hung on altars and temple doors for festivals. Sculptors soon carved them in stone, so the celebration would last forever. These hanging garlands, called festoons, came back in the Renaissance and again in the Rococo. They were often paired with the laughing face of Bacchus, god of wine and feasting, as an invitation to enjoy the table.
This candlestick carries that festive pairing. The upper stem is a swelling baluster set with masks, full faces with curling moustaches and wreaths of leaves. Garlands of fruit hang down beneath them. Below, a rounded knop leads to a broad domed base, covered with spreading leaves and framed by Rocaille cartouches and C-scrolls. The base rests on scrolled feet, each ending in a fanned shell. At the top, a flared cup with a wide rim holds the candle. The silver-tone finish has softened to a warm, mellow sheen, with deeper tones in the recesses.
The candlestick shows its age honestly: one of the masks is damaged, with a crack, and one foot is slightly bent, as pictured. It still makes a characterful piece for a mantelpiece, a dining table or a collector’s shelf, where its masks and garlands can be enjoyed up close.
In short, this is a vintage Rococo Revival style candlestick in silver-tone metal, with Bacchic masks, fruit festoons and a domed Rocaille base. It is 21 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
