Vintage Round Brass Hall Lantern with Curved Glass, Acorn Finials and Bun Feet, Two Lights, 65 cm
In French town houses, a lantern often hung in the stairwell, lighting the way from the ground floor up the turning flights of stairs. Simple round lanterns were a favourite for this spot, because their clear glass let the light fall evenly in every direction, onto every step.
This round hall lantern is a fine example of that simple form. A cylinder of clear glass is held between two plain brass bands by slim vertical uprights, with small acorn finials at the top and little bun feet at the base. Above, curved brass arms rise to a central rod, which hangs from a chain and a plain bell-shaped canopy. Inside, two candle-style lights stand on a curved branch. The glass is bombé, a French word meaning “swelling outward,” also used for the gently curving fronts of commodes and chests.
The lantern is in good vintage condition, with a mellow patina on the brass and some darkening on the chain. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to install. It makes a classic light for a staircase, an entrance hall or a landing.
