Vintage Silver-Plated Tureen and Footed Plate with Spiral Fluting and Pinecone Finial
For centuries the tureen was the heart of the European table. Before dishes were brought out one by one, a whole meal was laid out at once, and the tureen stood at the centre of it all. It was the piece guests saw first and the one hosts were proudest of, so it was made to be looked at as much as used. Its lid was crowned, its sides shaped and its stand worked with the same care given to the finest pieces in the house.
This vintage tureen carries that tradition with real presence. Lid, bowl and stand are all worked in gadrooning: rows of rounded ribs, here set on a swirl, a decoration borrowed from Renaissance silversmiths because each rib catches the light separately and makes the whole surface seem to turn. A pine-cone finial on a collar of leaves crowns the domed lid, and scrolled handles rise from either side of the bowl. The bowl stands on a pedestal foot within a matching stand finished with a beaded border. Rope-twist edging frames each section and draws the set together.
The tureen reaches us with the gentle marks of a long life. Its finish has mellowed to a warm golden tone across the ribs, rims and stand, with the soft wear that comes from years of handling and care. We have chosen to keep this surface as it is rather than polish it back, because the patina is part of the character the piece has earned. It makes a fine centerpiece on a dining table or sideboard, where the fluting can catch the evening light.
In short, this is a vintage lidded tureen and stand in patinated metal, in the classical revival style, with swirl gadrooning, a pine-cone finial and scrolled handles. It comes to you as a complete three-part set, with its original surface intact, exactly as pictured.
