At the eighteenth-century French table, wine was not left standing on the table. Each bottle was chilled in its own seau à bouteille, a small footed bucket filled with ice or cold water, often placed beside a guest’s chair. The royal porcelain works at Sèvres made them in matched sets, and silversmiths made them in metal. The shape, a flared bowl on a short foot with a handle on each side, has hardly changed since.
This small ice bucket keeps that classic shape. It has a gently flared body that narrows to a stepped, round foot. A band of fine ribs circles the upper body, and a matching set of rings decorates the foot. Two shaped handles, decorated with a small beaded drop, curve out from either side for carrying. The silver-tone finish has worn in places, letting a warm golden tone show through, which gives it a lived-in, characterful look.
The bucket is in sound structural condition, with signs of use, scratches and some spots of oxidation, as pictured. It works well for ice on a bar cart, as a cooler for a half bottle, or as a holder for kitchen utensils, flowers or a small plant.
