Vintage Single French Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconce with Ribbon Bow and Tapering Shaft

Crisp lines, a soft ribbon bow and two curving arms: this sconce is a clear, simple example of the Louis XVI look.

The sconce is topped with a ruched ribbon bow over a small fluted fan. Below, a tapering shaft is lined with fine horizontal ribs, finished with curled scrolls and a pointed tip. Two arms, wrapped in leaves and ending in a curl, sweep out and up to drip pans with ribbed undersides, fluted cups and candle sleeves. The style we call "Louis XVI" actually began before he took the throne in 1774. In the 1760s, Parisian designers were already turning away from rococo curves towards a cleaner look they called "le goût grec", the Greek taste.

The sconce is in very good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. It has kept its sharp detail and is ready for a new wall. Hang it beside a doorway, a mirror or a bed.
