Vintage Single Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Wall Sconce with Ribbon BowLeafy Branches and Mottled Cobalt Glass Tulip Shade

A white glass tulip, deepening to cobalt blue at its rim, hangs from a leafy gilt branch tied with a ribbon. It's a small sconce that brings a splash of colour to a pale wall.

The back plate is a short stem tied with a ribbon bow whose tails spread out below. Above the bow, sprays of small gilt leaves branch out on either side of a curved arm. The arm arches over and holds a bell-shaped glass shade, frosted white flecked with blue and pink, and shading to a strong cobalt at the flared rim. Mottled colour like this was usually made by rolling the hot glass through crushed coloured glass before it was blown. The specks melt in unevenly, so no two shades are exactly alike.

The sconce is in good vintage condition and is sold as found, with signs of age to the gilding. The old wiring reaches us as found. It has kept its original glass shade and is ready for a new wall. Hang it beside a bed, a dressing table or a doorway.
