Vintage Table Lamp, Robert de Schuytener, Black Column with Gilt Brass — Belgium, circa 1970

Robert de Schuytener was one of the Belgian designers of the postwar period who understood that a lamp base was a piece of architecture in miniature. Working in the tradition of the column lamp — a form with roots in the Empire period and a continuous production history through the twentieth century — he brought to it the discipline of a designer thinking about proportion and material rather than ornament: the right height, the right weight, the right contrast between the painted surface and the metal fittings.

This lamp is Belgian, circa 1970, by Robert de Schuytener, the form a square column lamp in black painted metal with gilt brass banding and fittings. The base is a square stepped plinth in the same black-and-gilt combination, its flat top surface providing a clean visual transition to the column shaft above. The column rises in a single straight shaft — square in section, its surface painted in a textured black finish — interrupted at two points by horizontal gilt brass bands that divide the height into three equal registers, the proportional discipline of a designer working with the column as a classical reference. At the crown, a gilt brass fitting carries the socket above a small white glass globe diffuser. The contrast between the matte black of the painted shaft and the warm gold of the brass banding is the whole design — two elements, one decision, executed with precision.
