Winged Lion Figure in Patinated Metal on Stepped Base, Lion of Saint Mark Style, Desk Ornament or Paperweight
A lion with wings strides across a small stepped plinth, head up and tail curled out behind. Small enough to hold in one hand, it carries all the confidence of a monument. It is a desk companion with a sense of history.
The figure is cast in patinated metal, showing a walking lion with a full, curling mane, raised wings with feathers picked out in relief, and a long tail. One front paw rests on a raised step. It stands on a rectangular stepped base with incised panels along its sides. The winged lion is the emblem of Saint Mark and of Venice, where it stands on columns, gateways and façades across the city.
The figure is in very good vintage condition, with a natural patina. It keeps the warm patina it has built up over the years. At about 625 g (1.4 lb), it's heavy enough to serve as a paperweight on a desk, and it sits well on a bookshelf or mantel among books and small objects.
