Antique 19th Century Alabaster Temple of Vesta, Grand Tour Souvenir with Four Columns and Domed Roof, Neoclassical Decor
In the 19th century, travellers on the Grand Tour of Italy brought home small carved models of the classical ruins they had seen, and the round Temple of Vesta was among the most loved. This one is carved in translucent white alabaster. Four slender columns rise from a stepped circular base to support a broad cornice and a smooth domed roof, crowned with a ball finial. The stone has a soft, milky glow that brightens beautifully when light falls through it. Small and serene, it makes a lovely piece for a bookshelf, a mantel or a cabinet of curiosities, a small reminder of Rome and the romance of travel.
Condition: Good Antique Condition. The original central altar and a small top ornament are missing; only the bent fixing pin remains above the ball finial. There are also small holes in the base where the altar once stood, surface marks, light grime and small chips to the base edge, consistent with age, as pictured.
