Antique 19th Century Neo-Renaissance Oak CasketStudded Mottled Plaques and Gilt Caryatid Mask Mounts, Long Glove or Jewelry Box

At each corner of this long oak casket, a small gilt maiden in a classical headdress looks out, like a caryatid holding up a Renaissance cabinet. Between them, oval panels of mottled plaque, dark brown streaked with amber, are framed in rows of beaded metal studs and anchored by domed brass cabochons. A brass escutcheon sits at the centre front. The shaped lid repeats the decoration, and the whole casket sits on a moulded serpentine base with four beaded brass bun feet. Made in the historicist taste of the Second Empire, when designers revived Renaissance forms, it’s long and narrow, just right for gloves, letters, jewellery or a collection of small treasures. Time has left its mark, and the oak still has a deep, honest patina.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, sturdy and solid. There are cracks, breaks and some losses to the decorative plaques, and the original textile lining is heavily worn and torn, especially in the base. There is general wear and patina consistent with age, as pictured.
