There is a compactness to this bouillotte lamp that suggests it was made for a smaller surface — a side table, a writing desk, or a narrow console — rather than the grander card tables the form was originally built for. Its green tole shade slides along a slender support rod, a detail that let the shade travel up or down to shield the eyes exactly where light was needed. It evokes the atmosphere of a compact, well-appointed Empire-style interior, where a lamp had to be both useful and unobtrusive, elegant enough to sit on a small table without overwhelming it.
The lamp has a shaped oval gilt bronze base, from which two candle arms with faux candle sleeves extend on either side, rising to a green tole shade with a pierced or scalloped lower edge. The shade shows small areas of paint loss, and our workshop will clean the lamp and fit matching standard candle sleeves and safe lamp holders before dispatch, retaining its original patina. The gilt bronze retains its warm, aged tone throughout.
