Brass lamps of this turned, candlestick form trace their shape back to an older lineage — the standing candlesticks of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, later fitted for electric light without losing the turner's rhythm of bulges and waists along the stem. This lamp, circa 1900, carries that heritage forward: a heavy, turned brass column rising from a wide, stable foot to a frosted glass shade banded in a soft rose stripe.

The brass is the piece to study here. Note how the stem isn't a single smooth taper but a sequence of turned forms — a slim neck, a full bulge, a narrow waist, repeating down to the base — the kind of profile that comes from a lathe worked by hand rather than a cast, one-piece stand. The weight tells the same story: this is a genuinely heavy, dense casting, which is why it sits so stable on a table. The frosted glass shade softens the light to a warm glow, its rose band adding a quiet touch of color against the brass.

Whoever owned this lamp used it well. The brass carries an honest, warm patina from age and handling, with no dents or losses to the turned column. It would suit a bedside table or writing desk where its solid base and soft light are equally at home.
