Antique Charles X Portico Mantel Clock with Inlaid Wood MarquetryFour Columns, Gilt Bronze Dial Surround, circa 1830

Four slender columns, with knurled gilt bronze capitals and bases, hold up the entablature of this classic French portico clock like the front of a small temple. Between them, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals hangs in a gilt bronze surround cast with scrolls, a mask at the top and a reclining cherub below, with a decorative pendulum swinging beneath. The case is dark wood inlaid in pale wood with flowing scrolls, roses and leaves on the crest, frieze and base, all edged with fine stringing and ribbed gadroon mouldings. It’s a handsome example of the Charles X style, when French cabinetmakers loved warm dark woods set off by light marquetry. It’s offered for restoration to working order, and it makes a fine mantel piece even as it stands.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, sold for restoration. The movement is not in working order and needs servicing. The case shows wear consistent with age, as pictured.
