Antique Charles X Style Marquetry Portico Mantel ClockFour Columns, Gilt Bronze Dial Surround, Working and Striking, 1800s

Four smooth columns, finely inlaid with pale stringing lines and capped top and bottom with gilt bronze, hold up the entablature of this classic French portico clock. Between them, the white enamel dial with crisp black Roman numerals sits in a gilt bronze surround of curling acanthus and scrolls, above a gilt pendulum embossed with flowers. The case is inlaid in pale wood with flowing scrolls, rosettes and Greek key returns across the frieze and base, framed by ebonized gadroon mouldings. Inside, the French movement keeps time and strikes on a bell. It’s a handsome working clock for a mantel, a library or a study.
