Swans were a favored Empire-period motif, associated with elegance and often paired with laurel and shell ornament, exactly the combination seen in the pierced gallery and fluted central column here. Above, a painted tole shade continues the theme, decorated with hand-painted swans flanking a shell-form urn. It carries the character of an Empire-inspired interior, the kind of lamp built to be a genuine centerpiece on a desk or console table.
The lamp has a three-arm base with each faux candle sleeve supported by a modeled bronze swan figure, set around a pierced gallery rim and fluted central column. Above sits an oval tole shade painted with a pair of swans and scrolling foliate ornament in dark tones against a cream ground. The metal shows a mixed patina with some verdigris, and the faux candle sleeves show wear and losses to their painted drip details, visible in the photos.
