Antique French Bronze Two-Handled Cup with Radiant Helios Sun God Mask, After the Antique, Gilt Interior, Neo-Grec, 1800s
A radiant face looks out from the side of this little bronze cup, crowned with a halo of sunbeams and framed by tousled curls. It’s Helios, the ancient sun god, in the form found on Roman silver and coins. Slender plant stems rise on either side of him, a band of tiny pendant buds runs beneath the flared rim, and the lower body is finely fluted like a classical column. Two small looped handles curl out at the waist, and the cup stands on a smooth, flared pedestal foot. Inside, a warm gilt lining glows against the rich chocolate-brown patina outside. Recreating the luxury vessels of antiquity was a speciality of the great Paris foundries in the 19th century. It’s a refined small piece for a desk, a library shelf or a cabinet of curiosities.
Condition: Good Antique Condition, even patina and light wear to the gilt interior consistent with age.
