Antique French Rouge Marble Inkwell with Brass-Mounted Hinged Lid — Late 19th Century Style Desk Inkstand

Before the fountain pen displaced the dip pen entirely, a desk inkwell was as much a fixture of a writing table as the paper itself — weighted in stone so a careless elbow wouldn't tip it, fitted with a hinged cap to keep the ink from drying between uses. This one was built for exactly that daily use, its solid marble mass doing the quiet work of keeping a nib and a temper both steady.

This is an inkwell carved from a single block of mottled red marble in a stepped pyramidal form, the body rising from a moulded rectangular plinth to a rounded, cone-topped cap. A brass-mounted hinged lid, its surface finished in a fine engine-turned guilloché band, opens on a pivot to reveal the well itself, which held a removable glass liner cup — the type of fitted insert used across nineteenth-century inkstands so the ink reservoir could be lifted out and cleaned separately from the stone body. No maker's mark is visible in the photographs supplied, so we attribute the piece to the late nineteenth century by style only, not as a documented date.

It reaches us with an old, stable repair to one edge of the marble base, visible as a fine fill line along the front moulding, and with the smaller of its two glass liner cups cracked — both are shown honestly in the photographs rather than described away. The marble body itself is sound, the hinge swings freely, and the brass mount shows only the soft tarnish expected of age. We pass it on as received, repair and crack included rather than hidden.
