Antique Marble Inkwell with Hinged Bronze-Tone Pot, French Empire Desk Accessory
In the age of Napoleon's empire, the writing desk became a small monument. Letters carried news, love and the business of a continent, and the objects that served them were made to match their importance. Designers of the Empire style drew on ancient Rome for their language of polished stone, gilded mounts and crisp classical ornament, and the inkwell stood at the centre of it all, within reach of every pen.
This inkwell carries that language onto the desk. A square base of deep green marble, veined with white, rises in a stepped plinth to a round gilt metal mount. The mount is wrapped in a border of raised leaf ornament, with a hinged lid crowned by a flame finial that opens to reveal the gilt well within. The base has a shallow raised border all the way around, forming a tray where pens and nibs were laid, while the hinged lid kept the ink from drying and dust from settling between letters.
The inkwell reaches us in very good overall condition, with one small loss to a corner of the marble base and gentle wear to the gilt mount from years of use. It has clearly been a valued companion at someone's desk, and it is ready to take its place at another. It sits naturally on a writing desk or in a library, where it will hold paper clips or small keepsakes as gracefully as ink.
