Antique Napoleon III Papier Mache Jewelry Box with Mother of Pearl Inlay, Painted Violets Lid, Tufted Silk Interior and Key
A posy of violets is painted across the glossy black lid of this little box, deep purple blooms tied with green leaves and a few long grasses, like a bouquet just gathered from a spring garden. Around it, a wide border of shimmering mother-of-pearl (burgauté) is laid in crazy-paving fragments, outlined in fine gilt dots that flash pink, green and silver as the light moves. The front is set with a pierced mother-of-pearl panel and a small keyhole, and the box rests on four little feet above a band of pearl inlay. Inside, the lid and base are lined in cream silk, deeply button-tufted like a tiny armchair. It still locks with its original key, ready for rings, brooches or treasured letters on a dressing table.
Condition: Good Antique Condition. There is a tiny loss of mother-of-pearl at one corner, light wear and small losses to the painted violets on the lid, and marks and stains to the silk lining in the base, as pictured. The lock works with its original key.
