Antique Rouen Faience Ceramic Candlestick Lamp Pair, Hand-Painted Floral — French, Circa 1900

Rouen had been a center of French faience production since the seventeenth century, its workshops known for a distinctive style of hand-painted decoration — dense floral scrollwork in blues, yellows, oranges, and greens laid over a soft cream ground. By the turn of the twentieth century, that same decorative tradition was being applied to candlestick forms wired for electric light, carrying the old craft into a new use.

This pair, French, circa 1900–1910, takes the classic candlestick silhouette — a stepped, faceted column rising from a flared foot — and covers nearly every surface in Rouen's characteristic floral and scrollwork painting.

Note how the floral vine winds continuously up the column's flat faces rather than repeating as a fixed stamped pattern, adjusting its rhythm to the shape of the piece as it climbs — the mark of decoration painted freehand rather than transferred. Each lamp is marked "Rouen" on the underside of the base, along with a small painted number.
