Antique Small Bouillotte Two-Light Lamp with Brass-Tone Dished Base and Painted Red Tôle Shade with Flowers and Ribbons
A posy of painted flowers, tied with a ribbon and framed by laurel, decorates the red shade of this little lamp. It's a cheerful, old-fashioned touch for a desk or bedside table.
The lamp stands on an oval dished base raised on small round feet. Two turned candle cups hold new candle sleeves on either side of a square rod. The rod rises through an oval shade in deep red, painted with laurel sprays, ribbons and small blue, pink and yellow flowers. A shaped handle at the top lets you lift the lamp, and the shade slides up and down the rod to set the light. According to tradition, the dished base of a bouillotte had a job at the card table. Players dropped a coin or token into it after each round as a tip for the household staff.
The lamp is in good antique condition, with small chips to the painted edge and signs of age inside the shade. It has been cleaned, with new wiring, holders and candle sleeves, and is ready for a new desk or side table. Set it on a writing desk, a nightstand or a small games table.
Painted bouillotte: an antique small two-light bouillotte lamp with a brass-tone dished base and an adjustable red tôle shade painted with flowers, ribbons and laurel, rewired and ready to use.
