After the war, French lamp makers found a way to bring the sparkle of the chandelier down onto the nightstand: stack cut glass on a slender rod, let the bulb above light it from within, and a small bedside lamp could scatter light the way a great pendant did. The formula — faceted glass between warm brass — became a signature of 1950s French bedrooms precisely because it did so much with so little.
This lamp base is French, a modernist design of the 1950s: two faceted glass elements, one tapered upward and one down, stacked hourglass-fashion between polished brass spheres on a plain circular brass foot, with the original push-button switch set into the base plate. Look through the facets at the brass stem behind them — the cutting splits it into a dozen repeating images, and that multiplication is the whole design: every light in the room, and eventually the bulb above, is doubled and redoubled inside the glass. The lamp's wiring is functional and it is brought to current standards through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered ready to use. It is sold as a lamp base, without shade.
The glass is in very good condition — no losses, no chips — and the brass is clean with no oxidation, carrying only the soft mellowing of its years, as the photographs show. Whoever switched this lamp on at their bedside before you kept it carefully. It is made for a nightstand, a dressing table, or a small console.
The lamp is cut glass and brass, checked and brought to standard before dispatch. It arrives professionally packed and fully insured — we handle the paperwork and worldwide shipping, with all import duties paid by us, so there is nothing to settle on delivery. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
