Neoclassical Column Lamp Base, Cream Marble with Gilt Bronze Mounts
The fluted column as a lamp base has stayed in production for a century for a simple reason: it borrows the proportions of classical architecture and scales them down to fit a side table. French and Italian workshops turned out versions in alabaster, marble, and onyx from the 1920s through mid-century, nearly always finished the same way — a plain stone shaft dressed up at both ends with cast gilt bronze, so the eye reads "column" even at fourteen inches tall.
This example follows that formula closely. The tapered stone shaft sits on a square, stepped plinth, with a gilt bronze foliate mount wrapping the base of the column and a matching collar at the top, just below where the fitting rises for the shade. The stone itself is cream-toned with a visible brownish vein running through one side — worth noting plainly rather than cropping around it, since it's the kind of natural marking that reads differently on a listing photo than in person. The gilt has toned to a warm, slightly uneven brass color consistent with age rather than recent replating.
It's been kept as a working lamp rather than a display piece — the cord and plug are the original vintage type, not a later replacement, and the socket shows expected tarnish inside from years of use. Suits a side table or console where the column shape can read against a plain wall behind it.
