Gothic Revival Style Inkwell, Pierced Gold-Tone Metal Cage with Twisted Columns, Faceted Glass Well and Stopper
A tiny cathedral for a pot of ink: pointed arches, twisted columns and finials, all in gold. It fits in the palm of a hand, but it gives a desk a real sense of architecture. It is a small piece with a great deal of character.
A square cage of pierced gold-tone metal stands on four small feet. Each corner is a twisted column topped with a flame-like finial, and each side is filled with tracery of pointed arches and leaf and heart shapes. Inside sits a faceted glass ink well, closed with a faceted glass stopper. The pointed arches and tracery come from medieval cathedral windows, and nineteenth-century designers revived them for everything from churches to desk accessories.
The inkwell is in good vintage condition, with light wear to the gilt finish. It keeps its glass stopper. On a writing desk it holds ink for a dip pen, and in a cabinet of curiosities it sits as a small architectural ornament.
