Naqashi is the Kashmiri term for the fine floral line-painting applied to wood and papier-mâché objects, a technique that traces back to Persian and Central Asian artisans who settled in the valley centuries ago and taught the craft to local workshops. A master naqash draws the design freehand, often with a brush made from a single hair, before assistants fill in the color and the piece is finished with varnish — lamp bases are one of the traditional object types this craft has decorated for

Naqashi is the Kashmiri term for the fine floral line-painting applied to wood and papier-mâché objects, a technique that traces back to Persian and Central Asian artisans who settled in the valley centuries ago and taught the craft to local workshops. A master naqash draws the design freehand, often with a brush made from a single hair, before assistants fill in the color and the piece is finished with varnish — lamp bases are one of the traditional object types this craft has decorated for generations, alongside boxes, trays, and vases.
This lamp carries that painting across a genuinely sculptural wood form: a flared cup at the top, a turned sphere, a section carved into an open spiral twist, and another sphere before the wide circular foot — each surface covered in dense floral motifs in red, orange, yellow, and green against the dark ground. The open twist section is worth noting specifically, since that kind of pierced spiral relies on the wood being carved and turned rather than built up, distinguishing it from flatter papier-mâché work.
The paintwork remains vivid and unfaded across the piece, with the color holding its saturation on every section rather than thinning out toward the base. At 56 cm tall, it makes its presence known and suits a room where a single colorful, sculptural object is meant to anchor attention rather than blend in.
