The generous double sconce was a French speciality of the 1950s — and in pairs, these fixtures did the work of chandeliers in the rooms that had no ceiling height to spare. Two arms sweeping apart under a sculpted crest, hung facing each other across a salon or flanking a long wall, gave a room both its light and its architecture at once.

This pair is French, from the 1950s, and generously scaled — each sconce thirty-six centimetres across: a stylised openwork leaf of looped brass rising as the crest above a polished sphere, from which two brass arms sweep down and outward, each carrying a wide cone of satin-frosted glass, finely speckled with a sugar-like texture and lined with slender gold arrowhead accents under a gilt rim. Light them and look at the frosted surface — the granular texture holds the glow evenly across the whole cone while the gold lines and rims stay crisp, the period's way of making a shade read decorated by day and luminous by night. The pair takes bayonet bulbs, is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, and arrives prepared for wall installation, in working order.

All four glasses are intact with their gilt lines well preserved, and the brass carries honest age spots and mellowing, as the photographs show. Whoever hung this pair facing each other before you kept all four cones safe. They are made for flanking a mirror, bracketing a sofa wall, or facing across a dining room.
