People walking past these sconces in the 1950s wouldn't have known the chemistry. They'd have just felt the room go warmer instead of brighter, which is a different thing entirely, and exactly what these were built to do.
The idea itself is far older than the decade stamped on this pair — Venetian glassmakers were clouding glass with bone ash back in the sixteenth century, and French workshops kept the technique alive for centuries after, right up until cheaper methods and two world wars thinned it out of most factories. What you're holding is one of the last generations of pieces made while that older, slower glasswork was still in regular production, mounted here on a plain ribbed brass arm that ends in a small black point — no ornament beyond what the shape itself does.
