Pair of Gilt Bronze Curtain Tiebacks, Floral Rosette Motif, 19th Century

Turn one of these over and someone left a mark: the letters "LB" and the number "79," cut directly into the metal rather than stamped afterward — most likely a maker's or installer's initials alongside a date, the kind of small signature a craftsman left on work meant to last, without expecting anyone in another century to go looking for it. It doesn't come with a name attached that we can confirm, but it's the closest thing to a handwritten note this pair carries forward from whoever made it.

The rosette itself uses a design vocabulary architects and metalworkers reached for constantly across the nineteenth century: acanthus leaves radiating outward from a central textured bud, cast deep enough to throw real shadow rather than reading as a flat stamped pattern. That depth is what separates a curtain tieback built to last from one built to be replaced — every leaf tip stands proud enough to catch light on its own.

Both pieces show the surface wear and even patina expected of genuine age rather than recent handling, and the mounting spike on each remains straight and structurally sound.
