When the Empire style swept France, even the candlestick stood to attention: shafts became obelisks and columns, ornament tightened into beading and crisp leaf bands, and the object on the mantel took on the discipline of architecture. This lamp is French, a silvered candlestick in the Empire taste, attributed to the nineteenth century: a tapering shaft with cut corners rising from a leaf-cast collar and a round moulded base, through a ringed knop to a ball and a dished drip pan beneath the candle sleeve. Watch the shaft as you move around it — the cut-cornered form breaks the light into flat, distinct planes rather than one running highlight, the Empire designer's way of making a small object read as architecture. The conversion to a lamp was made without piercing the candlestick, so the original body is unaltered beneath and the mounting is reversible — the respectful way these conversions were done.
