Tall Corinthian Column Lamp in Brass, Louis XVI Revival — Netherlands, 1960s

The Corinthian order was the last and most elaborate of the three classical column types, its capital carved with rows of acanthus leaf where the simpler Doric gave only a plain block and the Ionic a scrolled volute. Nineteenth and twentieth-century lighting makers returned to it constantly, because a fluted column reads as architecture even at the scale of a side table — a fragment of a temple brought indoors to hold a light.

This lamp follows that tradition closely. A fluted brass shaft rises from a stepped square plinth to a Corinthian capital worked with acanthus leaf, the vertical fluting doing double duty: on a real column it channels rainwater, and here it simply catches the light along the column's length, which is the detail that separates a lamp that understands the order from one that just borrows its silhouette. The shade is a crisp pleated white, gathered evenly at both rings.

This one has spent its life since the 1960s being looked after rather than used hard — the brass holds an even, bright polish with no dents or splits to the column or base, and the pleating on the shade sits clean and uncrushed. It's ready to be plugged in and used as it is.
