Decorators have long known that two different frames can sit happily side by side. In old French dressing rooms and bedrooms, small mirrors gathered over the years were often hung together, their shapes and patterns varying but their gilding tying them into one family. The mix gives a wall a relaxed, collected look that a matching pair never quite achieves.
This set brings together two Louis XV style giltwood mirrors. The larger has a shaped outline that curves gently in and out on every side, with a smooth, rounded moulding that catches the light along its edges. The smaller is an oval, its frame carved with a garland of roses running all the way around. Gilders could burnish gold leaf to a high shine in some places and leave it matte in others, so that a simple moulding seems to glow. The larger frame shows that bright sheen, while the oval has a deeper, more worn patina.
Both mirrors are in good vintage condition, with signs of age: some wear to the gilding, a few small losses to the frames, and a small spot on the oval’s mirror glass. Hung together, they make a charming pairing for a bedroom, a dressing room or an entrance, and they work just as well apart.
