Many of the decorative table lamps of the Napoléon III period began life burning oil. Ceramic vases were fitted with brass burners and clever new mechanisms, such as the moderator lamp, introduced in the 1830s, which used a spring to push oil steadily up to the wick. When electricity arrived, a great many of these handsome vase lamps were converted to take a bulb, and they have kept their place in French interiors ever since.
This lamp base, attributed to the Napoléon III period, is in that tradition. A bottle-shaped vase, with a full rounded body and a tall flared neck, is glazed in glossy black. It is decorated with bold bands of orange, interlaced strapwork around the neck, and sprays of leaves and scrolls painted in gold and orange. The vase sits on a cast metal stand with four scrolled feet and is topped by a leafy metal collar that holds the bulb fitting.
The lamp is in good condition, with small areas of wear to the gilding, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. With a shade of your choice, it makes a striking piece for a library, a living room or a sideboard.
