Vintage Pair of Gilt Metal Wall SconcesAttributed 20th Century, Fluted Rosette Backplates and Leafy Arms, Shade-Holder Prongs

When electric light first came into European homes, it was often harsh, and the bare bulbs of the time were bright to look at. Lighting makers soon added a simple solution: a small ring of spring prongs around each bulb holder, designed to grip a glass tulip shade. The shade softened the glare, and the prongs let it be lifted off easily when a bulb needed changing.

This pair of wall sconces, attributed to the twentieth century, has those prongs. Each fixes to the wall by a round rosette backplate with a scalloped edge and radiating fluting, like an open flower. From it, a single curved arm, decorated with a leafy motif, reaches out to a round drip-pan-shaped cup with a ring of shade-holder prongs around the bulb holder. The warm gilt finish has softened with age.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. Fitted with a pair of small glass tulips or clip-on shades, they suit a bedroom, a hallway or either side of a mirror.

In short, this is a vintage pair of gilt metal wall sconces, attributed to the twentieth century, with fluted rosette backplates, leafy arms and shade-holder prongs. They are exactly as pictured.
