Vintage Pair of Three-Light Wall SconcesAttributed Late 19th–Early 20th Century, Gilt Metal Beaded Arms with Chimera Brackets, 31 cm

In the late nineteenth century, many designers saw the whole history of ornament as theirs to use. They freely mixed Louis XV scrolls with Renaissance creatures and classical beading, often in a single object. This approach, known as eclecticism or historicism, produced some of the most richly decorated lighting of the age, made for grand apartments that wanted to impress.

This pair of three-light wall sconces, attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, shows that eclectic spirit. Each has a tall cartouche backplate with scrolls and leaves. Three arms spring from it: one rising at the centre, and two curving out to the sides. The arms are lined with rows of fine beading, and beneath each side arm a scrolled bracket ends in a small winged creature, a chimera of the kind beloved by Renaissance ornamentists. Every arm ends in a wide, leafy bobèche. Each sconce weighs 2.5 kg, so they are substantial pieces.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with a deep patina. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They make a bold statement in a salon, a dining room or a grand hallway.

In short, this is a vintage pair of three-light wall sconces in gilt metal, with beaded arms and chimera brackets, attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Each is 31 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
