Vintage Pair of Cassolettes, White Banded Stone Urns with Enamel Medallions and Gilt Metal Mounts, Attributed 19th Century, 29 cm
A cassolette began as a perfume burner. In eighteenth-century France, small pastilles of scented resin were burned in lidded urns to perfume a room, and the vessel took its name from the cassole, a small cooking pan. Over time, cassolettes became purely decorative, and pairs of them were made to flank a mantel clock, adding height and elegance to the fireplace.
This pair of cassolettes is attributed to the nineteenth century. Each is an urn of white banded stone, cut with flat, tapering sides and set with an enamel medallion in turquoise, blue and red. The enamel is in the cloisonné manner, where coloured enamel fills tiny cells formed by thin metal wires; cloison is French for “partition.” Gilt metal mounts complete each urn: curving handles on either side, a domed lid with a small finial, and a slender foot ringed by a band of enamel flowers. Each urn stands on an octagonal stone base with small round feet.
The cassolettes are in very good condition, as pictured. Together they weigh 3.1 kg, giving them a solid presence. They make a striking pair either side of a mantel clock or mirror, or at the ends of a console table.
In short, this is a vintage pair of cassolettes in white banded stone, with enamel medallions and gilt metal mounts, attributed to the nineteenth century. Each is 29 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
