In the 1940s and 1950s, Parisian decorators gave the Empire style a fresh, theatrical twist. They kept its classical shapes, the urns, columns and lion masks, but finished them in coloured lacquers set off by bright gilt accents. The result felt both historic and modern, and lamps in this manner became a mainstay of elegant post-war interiors.

This table lamp, attributed to the 1940s–50s, is in that spirit. It stands on a square wooden base, covered in a dark paper finish and decorated on its sides with gilt lion masks. A face like this is called a mascaron, a decorative mask used on buildings and furniture since ancient times, where lions in particular stood as guardians. Above, a trumpet-shaped urn in mottled green lacquer is wrapped at its foot and top by gilt bands of gadroons, the rounded ribs borrowed from classical silver. At the top, a gilt cup with a pierced Greek key border holds the bulb fitting.

The lamp is in good condition. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. With a shade of your choice, it makes a striking accent on a desk, a library table or a console.
