Vintage Art Deco Style Striped Wood Veneer Smoking Tray with Three Lidded Boxes and Brass-Tone Rails

After dinner, a set like this was carried to the coffee table. One box held cigarettes, one held pipe tobacco and one held matches, all on a single tray.

The tray and boxes are covered in a dark, glossy striped wood veneer. Three lidded boxes of different heights stand in a row, and each lid has a small, light-coloured cube knob. A brass-tone rail runs around three sides of the tray, held at the corners by dark triangular blocks. The stepped heights of the boxes echo the "setback" skyscrapers of 1920s and 1930s New York, which narrowed in steps as they rose. That stepped outline became a favourite Art Deco shape.

The set is in very good vintage condition. It has been looked after for decades and is ready for a new home. It no longer needs to hold tobacco: set it on a desk for clips, keys and earbuds, or on a dressing table for rings and cotton pads.

Smoker's set summary: a striped wood veneer tray with brass-tone rails and three stepped lidded boxes with light-coloured cube knobs.
