Vintage Baroque Style Single-Light Wall SconceGold-Tone Metal with Scaled Fish-Form Arm and Flowered Cartouche Backplate, about 14 cm

Dolphins and sea creatures were favourite ornaments in Baroque and later classical design. Sculptors set them on fountains, carvers wound them around table legs, and metalworkers shaped them into the curving arms of candlesticks and wall lights. A scaled body suited the job perfectly: its natural curve made a strong, graceful support, and its scales gave the surface rich texture that caught the candlelight.

This single wall sconce makes use of that idea. Its arm takes the form of a scaled, fish-like creature, curving out from the wall and up to the candle cup, with a small head turned back near the backplate. The backplate is a shaped cartouche framed by scrolls and clusters of cast flowers, crowned with a shell and finishing in a small pendant drop. At the end of the arm, a leaf-cast cup and a pierced, scalloped drip pan hold a white candle sleeve.
