Vintage Bouillotte Two-Light Lamp with Patinated Brass-Tone Navette Base and Red Tôle Shade
A carmine red shade with thin brass rims gives this lamp a strong, simple outline. It works as a single bold note of colour in a room with quiet tones.
The lamp stands on a dished brass-tone base with gently pointed ends, raised on four small beaded feet. Two turned candle cups hold cream candle sleeves with drip details, set either side of a square rod with a turned finial. The wide oval shade is painted carmine red outside and cream inside. It moves up and down the rod and locks in place with a side screw. It was made in the mid 20th century after the 19th-century models. The base shape is called "navette", the French word for the shuttle a weaver passes through the loom. The pointed oval is the same shape.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with a soft patina to the brass and light marks to the shade from age and use. The old wiring reaches us as found, and the lamp will be fully rewired in our workshop. A careful new owner will get many more evenings of light from it. Set it on a writing desk, a nightstand or a side table beside a reading chair.
