Vintage Brass Crane Figurine with Spread Wings and Green EyesMarked Portugal, Engraved Feather Detail on Leaf-Cast Base, 24 cm

Cranes and herons are easy to confuse. Both are tall, long-legged wading birds that stand in still water, and both have long been favourite subjects for decorative metalwork. In flight they are easy to tell apart: a heron folds its neck back into an S, while a crane flies with its neck stretched out straight. Standing still, as here, the two look much alike, and makers often blended them.

This brass figurine, marked “PORTUGAL” on its base, shows the bird at rest with its wings half-raised. Its long neck curves gently down towards a slender beak, and the head is set with small green eyes. The body and wings are finely engraved with feather markings, which stand out against the smooth brass of the neck and legs. The bird stands on a low, domed base cast with leaves.

The figurine is in good condition, with an original patina and a few light signs of use from age, and no breaks or missing parts. We are pleased to have it in our care and to send it on to a new shelf. Its tall, slim outline works well on a bookcase, a mantelpiece or a desk, alone or in a small group of brass pieces.

In short, this is a vintage brass crane figurine marked “PORTUGAL”, with spread wings, engraved feathers, green eyes and a leaf-cast base. It is 24 cm (9.4 in) tall, and it is sold exactly as pictured.
