Vintage Brass-Tone Breton Heraldic Trinket Dish, Ermine with Crown and Ermine Spots

A small ermine strides across the centre of this round dish, wearing a fluttering collar beneath a crown. It's the old emblem of Brittany, set inside a border of rolling waves.

The dish is round, in brass-tone metal, with a softly wavy, hand-shaped rim. In the centre, a medallion on a textured ground shows an ermine in relief, with a crown above and three stylised ermine spots around it, inside a border of running scrolls. The ermine has been the emblem of the Dukes of Brittany since the Middle Ages. Legend says the ermine would rather die than soil its white coat, so it became a symbol of honour and purity.

The dish is in very good vintage condition. It has held keys and coins in other homes, and it's ready to do the same in yours. It suits a hall table, a dressing table or a desk.
