By the 1960s, lamp design had begun stripping away the ornament of earlier decades in favor of honest materials handled simply — leather stitched over a plain column, a pleated shade doing nothing but its job. It was a quieter kind of luxury than gilt bronze or carved wood, one that relied on the material itself, and on the craft of the stitching, to carry the piece.
This lamp follows that restraint closely. A square base and column are wrapped entirely in leather, finished with visible top-stitching along every edge and seam — note how the stitching runs perfectly parallel down the full height of the column without a single skipped or doubled line, the mark of leather worked by a confident hand rather than a rushed one. The white pleated fabric shade sits above, softening the light into an even, ambient glow rather than a direct beam. Base and shade together read as a study in restraint: no ornament beyond the stitching itself.
