The bear has stood upright in European art and legend for centuries. It appears on the arms of the Swiss city of Bern, which takes its name from the animal, and in the woodcarvings of the Black Forest and the Alps. Those workshops filled tourists’ suitcases with bears on their hind legs, holding staffs, baskets or small lamps. Small metal bears in the same pose were made to sit on desks and inkstands, as paperweights or as companions to other objects.

This little figure shows a bear standing on its hind legs, head turned slightly to one side with its muzzle raised as if sniffing the air. Its front paws are held out and curled, and its shaggy coat is modelled in rough, flowing strokes over the whole body. Small rounded ears and a long snout give it a lively, characterful face. The metal has a dark brown patina, rubbed to a lighter tone on the raised fur.

The bear’s paws are curled as if it once held something, perhaps a staff or a small object, which is now missing. It does not stand on its own, so it would be best displayed in a curiosity cabinet or mounted on a small base. It is a charming miniature for anyone who loves bears or mountain cabins.
