Rococo designers seldom let a line run straight. Their favourite trick was the interlaced scroll, in which one curve loops through or around another, so that a simple support seemed to twist and turn like a plant growing towards the light. On a wall sconce, that looping line turns two plain arms into one continuous, flowing gesture.

This pair of wall sconces is built on that idea, in the Louis XV style. Each backplate is a tall spray of curling acanthus, rising from a leafy tail to a feathery crest. The two arms loop around each other in front of it, one curving low and wide, the other sweeping round and up to hold its light higher. Both arms are textured with leaves. They end in petal-edged drip pans and tulip-shaped leafy cups holding drip-effect candle sleeves. The two sconces are mirror images, so the raised arms point outward when they are hung either side of a mirror, a bed or a fireplace. The gilt finish is warm and mellow.

The sconces are in good condition, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. Their generous size suits a salon, a dining room or a bedroom with high walls.
