Vintage Mirror-Image Wall Sconce Pair, Gold-Tone Interlaced Leaf Scrolls, Shell Dishes and Cream Candle Covers, 30 cm
The most daring idea of the rococo was to abandon symmetry. Earlier French lighting had been designed around a central axis, with each side matching the other. In the 1730s, designers began to let a wall light lean, twist and grow to one side like a branch, with leaves and scrolls curling away in a single direction. The balance came back only when two lights were hung as a pair, each the mirror of the other.
This pair of wall sconces is made in exactly that way. Each is a single sweep of cast acanthus leaves and C-scrolls, with no separate backplate: the leaves themselves rise up the wall, twist into a knot of curling fronds and taper to a pointed tip below. From this tangle, two arms spring out at different heights, one high and one low, ending in leaf-cast cups and drip pans that hold cream candle sleeves. Because the two are cast as mirror images, they lean towards each other once hung.
