The green stone running through this lamp's body carries the parallel or wave-like banding trade sellers usually call "onyx," though in decorative arts that name is often applied loosely to banded calcite marble rather than true silica-based onyx — either way, the banding itself is a genuine geological signature, laid down over long stretches of time as mineral-rich water deposited layer after layer within the stone.
The lamp takes an urn form, with a fluted gilt brass neck and shoulder giving way to a cylindrical band of the green stone, then a deeper cup-shaped section in a darker tone of the same material. Gilt brass acanthus-leaf handles curve outward from the neck on either side, and a woven brass collar marks the transition between the two stone sections. The whole urn sits on a stepped, square base cut from the same banded stone, raised on small brass ball feet.
