The bow and arrow belonged to two figures of the ancient world: Cupid, whose arrows made people fall in love, and Diana, goddess of the hunt. Designers of the Empire and Neoclassical periods borrowed their weapons freely, and quivers full of arrows appeared on beds, mirrors, clocks and wall lights. To anyone who knew the stories, a quiver on the wall hinted at both romance and the chase.
This pair of wall sconces is in that Empire style. Each backplate is shaped as a quiver, the long case an archer used to carry arrows. It is fluted along its length, with the feathered ends of the arrows bunched at the top and a leafy drop at its point below. Three arms spring from the quiver: two curve out to the sides on scrolled stems, and one rises in front, set a little higher. Each holds a leaf-decorated bobèche and a card candle sleeve moulded with drips of “wax.” The gilt finish is bright and well preserved.
The sconces are in very good condition, with their bright gilt finish holding up remarkably well. We’d like them to keep shining in a home that will switch them on often. They look especially handsome either side of a dining room doorway or a sideboard.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Empire style quiver-and-arrow wall sconces in gilt metal, with three candle lights each. Each is 34 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
